The Sleep Lab Technician will carry out all technical duties for the sleep disorder laboratory under the supervision of the Supervisor or Medical Director to provide comprehensive evaluation of sleep disorders. This may incolve polysomnography (including in-lab and home sleep study), diagnostic and therapeutic services or patient care, coordination of home care services and education.
This associate will perform duties defined for a polysomnographyic technician and may provide oversight to other staff.
Also, effectively troubleshoot difficult problems and demonstrate the ability to use critical thinking skills for problem solving.
Associate may be required to work at multiple locations.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Prepare and calibrate equiptment required for testing to determine proper functioning, and make adjustment if necessary. This include applying electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standard to ensure proper signals and make adjustments if necessary.
Documents routine observations, changes in procedure, and significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results. Provides thorough documentation during data collection based on direct observation of the patient through technologist's notes. Follows "lights out" procedures to establish and document baseline values such as oxyhemoglobin saturation, and tidal carbon dioxide values, respiratory and heart rates, etc.
During data collection, monitor study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free and make adjustment, if necessary. Troubleshoots and makes minor repairs on equipment. Follows procedural protocols (such as PAP titration, PH probes, actigraphy, oxygen titration, research protocols, etc.) to ensure collection of appropriate data.
Implement appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic interventions such as continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc).
Oversees and performs different and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions as indicated based on information collected during the study.
Clean and sterilize all equiptment after sleep study as per infection control procedures.
Complete appropriate paperwork for documentation and billing.
Keep inventory of all stock supplies for the sleep lab and request all supplies as needed for purchase.
Score sleep study records according to the standard scoring rules.
REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma/GED required, Associate's Degree in Polysomnography preferred.
Minimum 6 months work experience.
Board Certification of Polysomnographer (RPSGT), or willing to acquire within 1 year of hire.
NYS License or work permit of polysomnographer
Maintain CPR/BCLS certification
Fundemental knowledge of operation of a polysomnography machine in conjunction with EEG, EOG, EKG, motion sensors, respiration monitors and other physiological activities, and continuous/bi-level positive airway therapy equipment.
Fundemental computer skills in conjunction with polysomnography.
Fundemental knowledge of operation of home-sleep study devices.
Evening and night shift employees work alone with patients.
