Overview
The IU Sleep Apnea Education Center RT works to provide comprehensive education, evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders including in center comprehensive patient care and direct patient education. In addition to proficiency in all competencies, the IU Sleep Apnea Education Center RT participates with clinical patient education, compliance management, and patient follow up. Education and management of our patients with sleep disorders requires understanding of the multifaceted disease processes that affect both sleep and wakefulness. The RT is credentialed and able to provide oversight help of other sleep center staff and is able to interact with physicians and other health care providers in a professional manner.

Position Summary
The Respiratory Therapist provides patient education, evaluation, and treatment support for individuals with sleep disorders, with a focus on sleep apnea therapy. This role delivers direct patient education, therapy compliance management, and follow-up care while collaborating with physicians and interdisciplinary teams. The RT applies established clinical guidelines, supports sleep center staff, and ensures high standards of patient care, documentation, and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Educate patients and families on sleep disorders, treatment options, PAP therapy, equipment use, sleep hygiene, and self-management.
- Monitor and support patient compliance with prescribed therapy and follow physician orders.
- Collect, analyze, and document patient information; communicate care needs and concerns to the healthcare team.
- Assist with PAP setup, acclimation, troubleshooting, cleaning, safety, and supply replacement education.
- Utilize EMR systems and maintain accurate, confidential patient records.
- Verify insurance authorization and patient financial responsibility as required.
- Promote patient, family, and community education related to sleep health.
- Adhere to professional standards, safety regulations, infection control practices, and sleep center policies.
- Maintain required credentials, licensure, and CPR/BLS certification.
- Participate in professional development and maintain competency in sleep medicine practices.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Requires current license as a Respiratory Care Practitioner from the state of Indiana.
- Requires graduation from a CoARC (Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care) and regionally accredited respiratory care program.
- Requires that the N.B.R.C. (National Board for Respiratory Care) registry exam be passed within 6 months of hire date. The 6-month requirement for the RRT is void if hire date is one year past graduation date.
- Requires Healthcare Provider Certification. Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
- Preferred ACLS; PALS; and/or NRP certification.
- Requires strong customer service skills.
- Requires effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Requires the ability to deal with confidential patient information.
- Requires basic computer skills and ability to work with EMR.
- Advanced knowledge of sleep disorders, related pathophysiology, and comorbidities.
- Strong patient education, motivational teaching, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently, think critically, and collaborate within a healthcare team.
- Cultural competence, customer service focus, and professional conduct.
- Proficiency with medical terminology, computer systems, and EMR documentation.
